Pay Attention to These Digital Security Trends in 2020

We’re waving goodbye to 2019, saying hello to 2020, and preparing for a new decade full of new things over here at Kobargo! But, before we officially say sayonara to the past year, we thought we’d do our annual digital security trends predictions. Here are just a few of the things we’re sure we’ll see in the security world in the new year:

Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Powered Data Management

While artificial intelligence is definitely not new to digital security tech discussions, it’s constantly evolving in our industry. As of April of 2019, WeForum reported that the entire digital universe is expected to reach 44 zettabytes by 2020; this means that there are 40 times more bytes than there are stars in the observable universe. Basically, there’s a whole lot of data to keep track of and tech capabilities are being created to help us sort through it all effectively.
With the help of machine learning and artificial intelligence, smaller batches of this data can finally become manageable. Not only that, but AI and ML are being used to enhance features such as face detection, analytics, and video analyzation even further. However, according to NetSparker, cybercriminals are looking to utilize these advancements as much as businesses are. As hackers become just as well-versed in AI as companies like us do, our tactics are constantly changing and 2020 sounds like no exception.

5G Connectivity

Thought it couldn’t get any better than a strong 4G connection? Think again. As 5G gains momentum in popularity and accessibility, get ready for a profound shift in the way you think about tech. With 5G comes faster speeds, larger bandwidths, and the ability for more devices to be connected to a network and run smoothly. Although this advancement is largely a positive one, there are concerns when it comes to the world of cybersecurity.
With the ability to employ larger bandwidths comes the need to keep the data it’s holding secure. There is also an issue of a larger variety and number of IoT devices being connected, like smart TVs, appliances, and security cameras. As these items gain the capability to connect to a network or cloud service, they’re able to get hacked just as easily as any computer. This helps our next trend make even more sense.

Consumer Privacy

In this day and age, we know it’s impossible to make use of the internet without leaving a significant digital footprint. From login data to your content, there’s a lot to look after and businesses charged with keeping that data safe are realizing how essential strong protection is.
According to AdRoll, the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and California’s Consumer Privacy Act are just a couple of examples of the ever-evolving need for privacy by businesses. They also state that 1st Party Data collection will become the main focus and the list of 3rd Parties qualified to manage the data will be refined because of it. Because of these new regulations others sure to arise due to demand in 2020. We’re expecting to see a massive push for even stronger consumer privacy and protection by safety-concerned consumers.

Increased Cybersecurity Budgets

Not unrelated to the increasing need for privacy, it’s also widely predicted that cybersecurity budgets are going to continue to increase in 2020 and beyond. In an article discussing further 2020 trends, Beyond Security stated that global security spending is expected to increase to $128 billion by 2020. That’s directly in line with Cyber Security Hub’s report of survey findings that show cyber budgets increased by 59% in the first half of 2019 with no signs of slowing.
Cybersecurity Ventures also reported that cybersecurity spending on both products and services is expected to exceed $1 trillion cumulatively over a five-year period between 2017-2021. With the number of breaches increasing, ransomware attacks on the rise, and a renewed focus on malware, we expect to see these increases and even more in the years to come.
